The organizer Sweden went as the favorite in Group 3 and lived up to its role. Mexico (3-0) and Hungary (2-1), which only had three players from the 54-man wonder team left (the 1956 uprising had spread the team across Europe and not all players were released), were defeated. Most recently, the Swedes were able to afford a 0-0 win against Wales. This result was important for the Welsh as it got them into the playoff against Hungary and won 2-1. As expected, Mexico finished last in the group.
Quarter finals
45,000 | Råsundastadion ( Solna ) | Sweden | Soviet Union | Leafe ( England ) | 2: 0 (0: 0) | 1-0 Hamrin (49th) 2-0 Simonsson (88th) |
Organizers Sweden did not have any major problems with the Russians, who had been weakened by the play-offs scheduled two days earlier. The 2-0 brought them safely to the semi-finals.
Semifinals
50,000 | Ullevi ( Gothenburg ) | Sweden | BR Germany | Zsolt ( Hungary ) | 3: 1 (1: 1) | 0: 1 Schäfer (24th) 1: 1 Skoglund (32nd) 2: 1 Gren (81st) 3: 1 Hamrin (88th) |
The Germans met Sweden in Gothenburg and it turned into a scandal from the guests' point of view. In the first half, Schäfer (23rd) took the lead for the Germans who played well. Despite the equalization by Skoglund (33rd), Fritz Walter & Co. dominated the opponent, but the (unpunished) toughness of the Swedes hit the Herberger team badly. After a clear foul on Helmut Rahn in the Swedish penalty area was not given and Erich Juskowiak allowed himself to be provoked by Hamrin, who is active in Italy, retaliated and flew off the field, the advantages were with the Scandinavians. Since Fritz Walter was only able to act as an extra due to an injury, the hosts scored two more goals in the last minutes of the game, which meant the final.
final
51,800 | Råsundastadion ( Solna ) | Brazil | Sweden | Guigue ( France ) | 5: 2 (2: 1) | 0: 1 Liedholm (4th) 1: 1 Vavá (9th) 2: 1 Vavá (32nd) 3: 1 Pelé (55th) 4: 1 Zagallo (68th) 4: 2 Simonsson (80th) 5: 2 Pelé (90.) |
Brazil : Gilmar - D. Santos , N. Santos , Zito - Bellini (c), Orlando - Garrincha , Didi , Vavá , Pelé , Zagallo . Coach: Vicente Feola
Sweden : Svensson - Bergmark , Axbom , Börjesson - Gustavsson , Parling - Hamrin , Gren , Simonsson , Liedholm (c), Skoglund . Coach: George Raynor
Referee: Maurice Guigue ; Albert Dusch , Juan Gardeazábal
50,000 spectators then saw the final in Stockholm. The Brazilians didn't let the early goal by Liedholm (4th) bother them. Garrincha, Vava and Pelé played their technically brilliant game in an inimitable way, came 2-1 before the break with two Vava goals, before Pelé, Zagallo and again Pelé the Swedes (Simonssen in between to 2: 4) with 5: 2 gave up.
