Hilderaldo Luiz Bellini (born June 7, 1930 in Itapira , São Paulo , † March 19, 2014 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian football player . In the 1950s he had great success with the CR Vasco da Gama in Rio de Janeiro . In the 1960s he played for São Paulo FC . The high point of his career was when he was the captain of the Brazilian national team at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden and was allowed to receive the then World Cup trophy , the Coupe Jules Rimet - and raised it with both hands over his head in a stylish way.

career

Hilderaldo Bellini joined in 1947 of just founded Sociedade Esportiva in his hometown Itapira - some 180 kilometers east of state capital São Paulo on the border with Minas Gerais located - to that year at Hinterland championship, the Campeonato do Interior took part of the state . From 1949 he played for Esportiva in nearby São João da Boa Vista.

At the end of 1951 he was brought to the CR Vasco da Gama in the then federal capital, Rio de Janeiro . With the state championship in 1952, the Maltese cruisers won the last title of their era as Expresso de Vitória , the club's golden era.

Bellini was captain and central defender in the Seleção at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, when Brazil won the World Cup for the first time with inspiring combination football and a 4-2: 4 system that surprised the Europeans. The defense organizer, nicknamed "Eisenfuß", was a guarantee that Vicente Feola's team completed the preliminary round and the quarter-finals in Sweden without conceding a goal and only conceded the first two goals in the scoring semi-final against France. His greatest strength was not necessarily on the field, but rather in his personality, which made him a leading figure at Vasco and in the national team. The defensive formation of the tournament in Sweden with goalkeeper Gilmar , the full-back pair Djalma Santos and Nílton Santos as well as in the central defense with Bellini and Orlando and the defensive boss in midfield, Zito , was one of the best that world football has ever seen in world tournaments. Due to the outstanding offensive players Garrincha , Didi , Vavá and Pelé , the great defensive skills of the first Brazilian world championship team faded somewhat into the background.

Bellini still took part in the 1962 World Cup in Chile - there he was only the reserve of his successor Mauro and pursued the defense of his title from the bench - and in his third World Cup participation in England in 1966 he played again in two group games. He made his debut in the national team on July 13, 1957 in Lima against Peru (1: 1), his last of 56 international matches he completed on July 15, 1966 in Liverpool in the 1: 3 defeat in the World Cup preliminary round against Hungary . He was in the years 1957 and 1959 each second with the national team at the Copa America , each as a player of Vasco da Gama.

He continued his club career until 1960 with Vasco da Gama, São Paulo FC (until 1966) and ended his active career in 1969 with Athletico Paranaense .

Bellini, who - as was initially mistakenly assumed - did not suffer from Alzheimer's disease , died in a hospital in São Paulo . At the request of the neurologist Ricardo Nitrini, the Bellinis family made the brain of the deceased available for medical Alzheimer's research. The examinations by the neuropathologist Dr Lea T. Grinberg revealed that Bellini was suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) . Bellini's brain showed symptoms of level 4, the highest level.
