Orlando Peçanha de Carvalho , usually just called Orlando Peçanha , (born September 20, 1935 in Niterói , Rio de Janeiro , † February 10, 2010 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian football player . With the Brazilian national team he was world champion in 1958. At club level he had great successes in Brazil with CR Vasco da Gama and FC Santos and in Argentina with the Boca Juniors . With his powerful style of play and the ability to read the game, he is one of the best defenders in Brazilian football history.

Life

In 1953 Orlando Peçanha joined the youth of the top club CR Vasco da Gama in Rio de Janeiro, where he moved up to the combat team in 1954. With the club, which after the end of its heyday in previous years, where he caused a sensation as Expresso da Vitória , he won in 1956, under the coach Flávio Costa , and in 1958 the state championship in Rio de Janeiro . In 1958 he also won the Torneio Rio-São Paulo - in the absence of a national competition a highly coveted title at that time. Together with Hilderaldo Bellini , who was also the captain of the national soccer team of Brazil , he formed a strong defensive duo.

In May 1958, Orlando Peçanha also made his debut with the national team. In São Paulo the Seleção won against Bulgaria 3-1. A month later he was taken on a trip to Sweden for the 1958 World Cup . There, Orlando Peçanha and Bellini formed the defensive backbone of the Seleção, who impressed the world with the brilliant offensive players Garrincha , Didi , Vavá and the 17-year-old Pelé and brought the title to Brazil for the first time with a brilliant 5-2 final win over Sweden.

In 1959 he took part in the Copa America in Argentina with Brazil . When the score was 0: 1, he was sent off the field in the game against Uruguay along with another Brazilian and two Urus . Brazil won 3-1 in the end. Overall, however, it was only enough for second place behind the hosts.

In 1960 he won the Taça do Atlântico with the Seleção , in which the national teams of Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay also took part in that year.

In February 1961, Orlando Peçanha moved to the Boca Juniors in Buenos Aires, where his coach at the 1958 World Cup, Vicente Feola, sat on the bench for a year. In the Bonarens press he was soon promoted to Señor del fútbol and in the club to captain. During his time with the club at the mouth of the Riachuelo , he won the championships of 1962, 1964 and 1965. When he last won the title, he only played three times in the Boca jersey before moving to Santos.

The highlight of his time with Boca Juniors was probably reaching the final of the Copa Libertadores . This was the first time an Argentine club reached the continental finals. In the final games held in September, the juniors were defeated by the then dominant team of FC Santos with 2: 3 and 1: 2. During his time at Boca Juniors, he also played with fellow countrymen Dino Sani , Paulinho Valentim and Almir Pernambuquinho and the captain of the Argentine national team Antonio Rattín . For the Boca Juniors he was a total of 119 times on the ball, but he did not manage to hit.

For the 1962 World Cup in Chile, Orlando Peçanha was not considered because he played abroad. It was not until the tournament in Spain in 1982 that legionaries were invited to play in the Seleção with Falcão from AS Roma and Dirceu , who was under contract with Atlético Madrid .

In 1965, Orlando Peçanha, who had become very popular in Argentina, left Buenos Aires and returned to Brazil. In the same year he won the Taça Brasil with FC Santos , the national cup competition introduced in 1959, which was later recognized as the national championship. In the final, Vasco da Gama of all people was the opponent. However, the team from Rio had no chance against the stars around Pelé and lost the finals with 1: 5 and 0: 1. In the same year and 1967 he won the State Championship of São Paulo with Santos .

At the Football World Cup in 1966 , Orlando Peçanha was again in Brazil's squad. But he only came to one mission. Representing Bellini, he was the captain of the Brazilian team that lost 3-1 in the decisive group match against Portugal for players like Eusébio and Mário Coluna and had to say goodbye to the tournament. With his only defeat in the national jersey, his international career also ended at this point. He played a total of 34 times for Brazil, 30 of them in senior international matches.

At the beginning of 1970 he returned to Vasco da Gama for a very short time and let his playing career come to an end there at the age of 34.

He then worked as a trainer at CS Alagoano in 1977 and at EC Vitória in 1980 . Above all, his work as long-term chairman of the Brazilian coaching association, the Associação Brasileira de Treinadores de Futebol, should be emphasized .

In February 2010, he died of heart failure in a hospital in Botafogo , south of Rio de Janeiro, at the age of 74. He was buried in the local São João Batista cemetery.
