El Gráfico was an Argentine sports magazine published monthly by Revistas Deportivas SA in Buenos Aires . Originally published weekly as a general magazine in May 1919 , the magazine has only been dedicated to sport and, in particular, to football since 1925. In 2002 the frequency of publication was changed to monthly. Since January 2018, El Gráfico only exists as an online publication. The last sold edition was 14,000 copies.
history
The name of the magazine can be seen in connection with its first issues. Number 1 consisted of 12 pages, almost exclusively of photographs with very little text. At a time when there were hardly any images to be seen in newspapers, El Gráfico immediately had an exceptional position and was very quickly successful. Sport hardly happened in those early days. Sports topics were only included occasionally. In the course of 1925 some experiments were carried out to put the sport more prominently. Eventually the magazine focused only on this topic. Football came more and more to the fore and there is only marginal coverage of other sports.
Over the decades, El Gráfico has also acquired a great reputation in the rest of Latin America for high-quality journalism paired with appealing photography. In Argentina, the magazine enjoys the reputation of a "Bible of Sports" ( Biblia del deporte ).
In terms of circulation , El Grafico had its peak after the 1986 World Cup , when 690,998 were sold - almost 100,000 more than when Argentina won the title eight years earlier. Diego Maradona graced the title more than any other athlete: he was depicted 134 times on the front. It is followed by Daniel Passarella and Norberto Alonso with 58 and 54 titles respectively.
Quote
"For every Argentine footballer there are only three dreams: to play in the first team of his favorite club, to appear on the front page of the Grafico, to play in the national team."
