He played for Brazil between 1958 and 1966 at three soccer world championships and won the title at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden and at the 1962 World Cup in Chile . In 1969 he ended his career with FC Santos at the age of 39.

societies

Gilmar dos Santos Neves, who grew up as the son of a merchant in Santos, began his career as a football goalkeeper at Jabaquara AC from Santos. At the club he made his debut on September 10, 1950 against São Paulo FC .

In 1951 he moved to Corinthians São Paulo, where he was able to celebrate winning the Campeonato Paulista straight away. In total, he achieved this success eight times. In 1961 he became a goalkeeper at Pelé Club FC Santos. Corinthians let the goalkeeper of the world championship eleven of 1958 in Sweden move for $ 3,000. In 1962 (against CA Peñarol ) and 1963 (against CA Boca Juniors ) he won the Copa Libertadores and the World Cup with FC Santos . In the World Cup, Gilmar and his teammates from FC Santos beat Benfica Lisbon in 1962 (3: 2/5: 2) and against AC Milan in 1963 in three games (4: 2, 2: 4, 1: 0). Gilmar renounced the usual "show parades" and gave his back team the necessary calm. In addition to excellent responsiveness, he had a feline suppleness and agility. In his stoic calm he was comparable to top goalkeeper colleagues like Banks , Jashin and Zoff .

In the Brazilian national team, the Corinthians goalkeeper made his debut on March 1, 1953 in Lima in the international match against Bolivia . During a trip to Europe with games in April and May in 1956 against Portugal , Switzerland , Austria , Czechoslovakia , Italy , Turkey and England , Gilmar guarded the goal as the undisputed supporter of the Seleção and made a name for himself as a "penalty killer". Only the defender pair Djalma and Nílton Santos were already undisputedly the regular line-up of the national team in the 1956/57 season - the year before the 1958 World Cup. Gilmar became number one for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden thanks to the performance of the European tour, displacing the previous goalkeeper Castilho from Fluminense Rio de Janeiro , who was still in goal during the 1954 World Cup. It was not until the semi-final against France that Gilmar, who came up with the shirt number 3 , which is extremely atypical for a goalkeeper, conceded the first goals against the World Cup days 1958 in Sweden on June 24, 1958 in the Råsundastadion in Stockholm by Just Fontaine and Roger Piantoni . A total of four hits are impressive proof of how important Gilmar was to the success of the Brazilians.

With his sovereignty and thus calm radiating class, he often saved his team from goals. After losing the prestige duel for the South American Championship against Argentina, Gilmar was banned from the national team. With Corinthians, too, he temporarily moved into the second tier. Only after moving to FC Santos did he return to the national team for the 1962 World Cup . When defending his title in Chile , his qualities impressively prevailed again. For the second time in a row, Gilmar, now also with the 1 , was the dormant pole of the Seleção at a world championship. The defensive in Chile - in contrast to 1958 in Sweden - was much more challenged. For some top performers the four years were more noticeable and the injury of Pelé already in the group games contributed significantly to the fact that only offensive football would not have been able to defend the title. Gilmar had to accept only five goals on the way to another title win. With this tournament performance, he was undisputedly the best of the few top goalkeepers in Brazil. In the goalkeeper-century election in Brazil, he came first, in South America fourth.

After the successful days in Chile, Gilmar had to give way to the talent Manga in goal. Immediately before the 1966 World Cup in England , the 36-year-old veteran got a new chance. He played the two group games against Bulgaria and Hungary on the island and was replaced by Manga in the decisive third game against Portugal. Gilmar's 3-1 defeat to Hungary on July 15 at Goodison Park in Liverpool was chalked up in the media . The resignations of Didi , Nílton Santos and Vavá as well as the injury-related absence of the world's best footballer Pelé against the team of Flórián Albert and Ferenc Bene were pushed into the background.

Gilmar has been in goal in 14 world championship games. In the 2-1 win on June 12, 1969 in Rio de Janeiro against England, the popular goalkeeper of FC Santos played his farewell game in the national dress. From 1953 to 1969 he played 94 internationals for Brazil.

After the career

Gilmar was the national team supervisor for a short time. At FC Santos he worked as a coach and functionary and as head of the players' union he campaigned for the interests of the professionals. He was covered for business mainly as the owner of two car dealerships in Sao Paulo.
