Djalma Santos (born February 27, 1929 in São Paulo , † July 23, 2013 in Uberaba ( MG )), actually Dejalma Dos Santos , was a Brazilian football player . Besides Franz Beckenbauer and Philipp Lahm , he is the only one who was elected to the All-Star-Team at three World Championships (1954, 1958 and 1962).

career

societies

Santos began his career as a footballer in 1948 with the Portuguesa in his hometown. He is still considered one of the best right-backs of all time. He always benefited from his excellent technique and was also equipped with an outstanding physique. So he could convert throw-ins into real flanks, the balls reached the opponent's penalty area. But despite his athleticism, the only 1.73 m tall and 73 kg heavy Djalm Santos never looked for excessive hardness and preferred the technically elegant game. It is significant that he was not sent off in his career as a defender.

His club career at Portuguesa São Paulo , Palmeiras São Paulo and Athletico Paranaense lasted from 1947 to 1971. During this time, he played over 1000 league games and won numerous important titles, such as the Brazilian Cup with Palmeiras, the Taça Brasil in 1960 and 1967, as well 1967 also the first Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa , which can be rated as the forerunner of the Brazilian national championship introduced in 1971 . With José Altafini , Julinho and Vavá , Djalma Santos experienced a new heyday during his time at Palmeiras from the mid-1950s.

On October 23, 1963, he was a member of the FIFA selection in London, which on the 100th anniversary of the English Association lost to England in front of 100,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium with 1: 2 goals. He formed the defender pair in the first half (half-time: tie 0-0) in front of goalkeeper Lev Jashin with Karl-Heinz Schnellinger . From Pele , he was in the FIFA 100 was added, a list of the 125 greatest living soccer players.

On July 1, 2013, Djalma Santos had to go into inpatient treatment because of pneumonia. He died on July 23, 2013 as a result of the lung disease.

National team

Brazil 1958: Vicente Feola (coach), Djalma Santos, Zito, Bellini, Nilton Santos, Orlando, Gilmar - Garrincha, Didi, Pelé, Vava, Zagallo.

He won the football world championships in 1958 and 1962 with the Brazilian national team and took part in four world championships from 1954 to 1966 . He made 98 appearances for the Brazilian national team and was Brazil's record player from September 20, 1959 to July 3, 1998.

Campeonato Sudamericano 1959 Back: Djalma Santos , Gilmar, Bellini, Décio Esteves, Formiga, Coronel, masseur Mário Américo; Front: Garrincha, Didi, Paulo Valentim, Pelé, Chinesinho

In 1959 he was with the national team undefeated second behind the hosts at the South American Football Championship in Buenos Aires .

He wore the Brazilian national shirt for the first time on April 10, 1952 in Santiago de Chile against Peru (0-0) alongside Ademir , Didi and Nílton Santos . Two years later he was part of the squad for the World Cup tournament in Switzerland. In the quarter-finals against Hungary he showed a strong performance despite his team's 4-2 defeat and kept left winger Zoltán Czibor in check. The 1958 World Cup in Sweden was initially an unpleasant chapter for Santos: The right-back, who was particularly characterized by maneuverability, ball security and speed, had to wait until the final for his first World Cup appearance. Only after the failure of Nílton De Sordi , coach Vicente Feola remembered the qualities of Djalma Santos. In the 5: 2 final victory over the hosts Sweden, he condemned their previously outstanding left winger Lennart Skoglund to insignificance.

When he defended his title in Chile in 1962, when Pele was injured in the preliminary round match against Czechoslovakia, success was sought from a strong defensive position. In addition to Garrincha and Amarildo , the right-back was one of the top performers in the Seleção . Even when Brazil failed in the preliminary round in England in 1966, he was part of the team. It was badly prepared, however, because the top Brazilian clubs preferred to play lucrative private games around the world than to send well-rested players to the World Cup. In 1968 he wore the national team jersey for the last time in the 2-0 win against Uruguay.
