Charles Philip Snyder (born June 9, 1847 in Charleston , Virginia , † August 21, 1915 in Vineland , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1889 he represented the third electoral district of the state of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Snyder was born in 1847 in Charleston, which at that time still belonged to Virginia, but later became part and even the capital of the state of West Virginia. After a good primary school education, Snyder studied law and began to work in this profession after his admission as a lawyer. Between 1876 and 1884 he was a district attorney in Kanawha County . Politically, Snyder was a member of the Democratic Party . After the resignation of Congressman John E. Kenna , he was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives when the by-election in the third district of West Virginia was due. After two re-elections, he was able to exercise this mandate between May 15, 1883 and March 3, 1889.

After serving in Congress , Snyder was a criminal court judge in Kanawha County between 1890 and 1896. From 1897 to 1901 he served as the American consul in Mexico . He died on August 21, 1915 in Vineland, New Jersey and was buried in Charleston. His son Charles (1879–1964) was an American admiral during the Second World War .
