Edward Theodore England (born September 29, 1869 in Gay , Jackson County , West Virginia , †  September 9, 1934 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1927 and 1929 he represented the sixth constituency of the state of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward England attended the public schools of his homeland and then until 1892 the Concord Normal School in Athens . He then taught himself as a teacher for a few years. After studying law at Southern Normal University in Huntingdon ( Tennessee ) and being admitted to the bar in 1898, he began working in his new profession in Oceana . In 1901 he moved his residence and office to Logan .

England was a member of the Republican Party and was elected Mayor of Logan in 1903. Between 1908 and 1916 he was a member of the West Virginia Senate , of which he became president in 1915. Through this office he held the functions of Vice Governor from 1915 to 1916 ; officially there was this post in West Virginia only since 2000. In 1915 he was chairman of the first nationwide meeting of all lieutenant governors of the United States, which took place in Rhea Springs, Tennessee. Between 1917 and 1925 England was the Attorney General of West Virginia. He also served as the state counsel before the Supreme Court when Virginia State claims were being tried there. This involved claims for services rendered for West Virginia when the area was still part of Virginia. In 1923 England was President of the Association of Attorney Generals of all US states.

In 1924 England competed unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the upcoming gubernatorial elections . In 1926 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the sixth district of West Virginia , where he succeeded the Democrat J. Alfred Taylor on March 4, 1927 . But since he lost to Joe L. Smith in the following elections in 1928 , England could only hold one term in Congress until March 3, 1929 . After his tenure in Congress, England worked as a lawyer in Charleston . He died in Cleveland on September 9, 1934 and was buried in Charleston.
