Cleveland Keith "Cleve" Benedict (born March 21, 1935 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania ) is a former American politician . Between 1981 and 1983 he represented the second constituency of the state of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Cleve Benedict attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1953 the Hill School in Pottstown . Until 1959 he studied at Princeton University ; then he was until 1962 at the Graham School for Cattlemen in Graham ( Kansas ). In the following years he worked as a dairy farmer.

Benedict became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1974 and 1975 he was a member of the West Virginia Pardons Committee; from 1975 to 1977 he was State Commissioner, Finance and Administration . From 1977 to 1980, Benedict was Republican Party Chairman in West Virginia. From 1964 to 1976 he took part in all regional party conventions. In 1984 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Dallas , where US President Ronald Reagan was nominated for a second term.

In 1980, Benedict was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the Second District of West Virginia . There he took over from the Democrat Harley Orrin Staggers on January 3, 1981 . He became a member of the Energy and Trade Committee. Since he renounced another candidacy in 1982, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1983 .

In the same year Benedict ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate . In 1984 he failed in an attempt to return to the US House of Representatives. In 1983 he worked for the Federal Ministry of Energy. Between 1985 and 1986 he was chairman of RSM Inc. , a Washington-based company. From 1989 to 1993 he was the West Virginia agricultural officer. In 1992, Benedict ran unsuccessfully for governor of West Virginia; in 1996 and 2000 he was again a delegate to the Republican National Conventions. Today he works as a dairy farmer again.
