Hugh Ike Shott (* 3. September 1866 in Staunton , Virginia ; † 12. October 1953 in Bluefield , West Virginia ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . From 1929 to 1933 he sat for the US state West Virginia in the US House of Representatives . From 1942 to 1943 he represented West Virginia in the US Senate .

biography

Shott was born in Staunton, northern Virginia, where he grew up. He moved to Bluefield in the far south of West Virginia, where he became the owner of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph , the most widely read morning paper in town. He also served as the postmaster for Bluefield. In 1928 he first drew political attention when he ran for the seat of the 5th constituency of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives. In 1929 he moved into the US House of Representatives after the successful election. In 1928, his sons bought Bluefield's only radio station, giving the Shott family control of the media in and around Bluefield. In 1930 Shott was re-elected, in 1932 he was defeated by John Kee and consequently left the House of Representatives in 1933.

In 1936 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate. After the resignation of Matthew M. Neely , Shott ran in the by-election for the remainder of the term. He was able to prevail and was from November 18, 1942 to January 3, 1943 Senator for West Virginia. Shott does not run for the main election. Instead, he continued to build his media empire. So he also received the license for the only television station in Bluefield. Shott died in October 1953 in his hometown at the age of 87. He left behind his wife and two sons.
