Carl George Bachmann (born May 14, 1890 in Wheeling , West Virginia , † January 22, 1980 there ) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1933 he represented the first constituency of the state of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Carl Bachmann attended public schools in his home country including the Linsly Institute , which he graduated from in 1908. He then continued his education at for two years Washington and Jefferson College in Washington ( Pennsylvania continued). He then studied law until 1915 at West Virginia University, among other things. After his admission as a lawyer in the same year, he began to work in Wheeling in his new profession. In January 1917 he was appointed assistant district attorney in Ohio County . Between 1921 and 1925 he was the actual district attorney in this district.

Bachmann was a member of the Republican Party and was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in 1924 as its candidate in the first district of West Virginia . There he took over from Benjamin L. Rosenbloom on March 4, 1925 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1933 . The last few years have been shaped by the global economic crisis. In the elections of 1932, which resulted in a great victory for the Democratic Party nationwide , Bachmann also lost to the Democrat Robert L. Ramsay .

After the end of his time in Congress, Bachmann worked again as a lawyer in Wheeling. In 1934 he ran unsuccessfully to return to Congress. From 1939 to 1941 he was a member of the Wheeling City Council. Between 1941 and 1944 he was also a member of the West Virginia State Control Commission on alcohol handling. At the same time he was the executive director of the civil defense authority of his state. Bachmann was Mayor of Wheeling between 1947 and 1951. He then continued to work as a lawyer. He also got into banking. Carl Bachmann died in January 1980 in his hometown of Wheeling at the age of 89. He was married to Susan Louise Smith since July 14, 1914, with whom he had three children.
