John D. Alderson

John Duffy Alderson (born November 29, 1854 in Summersville , Virginia , † December 5, 1910 in Richwood , West Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1895 he represented the third constituency of the state of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Born in what is now West Virginia, John Alderson attended public schools in his homeland. Between 1871 and 1873 he held the ceremonial office of "Sergeant of Arms" in the West Virginia Senate . Until 1873 he was also a door keeper there . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1876, he began to work in his new profession in his birthplace, Summersville, which was then still called Nicholas Court House . Between 1876 and 1889, Alderson was District Attorney for Nicholas County and Webster Counties . Between 1883 and 1887 he was an employee of the State Senate.

Alderson was a member of the Democratic Party and was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in 1888 as its candidate in the third district of West Virginia . There he took over from Charles P. Snyder on March 4, 1889 . After two re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until March 3, 1895. In the elections of 1894 he was defeated by Republican James Hall Huling . After his tenure in Congress ended, Alderson returned to practice as a lawyer. In 1900 and 1908 he was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions . John Alderson died on December 5, 1910 and was buried in Summersville.
