Alex X. Mooney (born June 7, 1971 in Washington, DC ) is an American politician . Since January 2015 he has represented the state of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alex Mooney graduated from Frederick High School in Maryland . He then studied at Dartmouth College in Hanover ( New Hampshire ) until 1993 . As a member of the Republican Party , he embarked on a political career. In 1992 he ran unsuccessfully for the New Hampshire House of Representatives . He served on the staff of Congressman Roscoe Bartlett from 1993 to 1995 . He served in the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2010 ; from 2010 to 2013 he headed the Republican Party at the state level. Between 2011 and 2013 he was also a member of the Republican National Committee . From 2005 to 2011 he was also executive director of the National Journalism Center .

In the 2014 congressional elections , Mooney was elected to the US House of Representatives in the second constituency of West Virginia with 49:47 percent of the vote against Democrat Nick Casey, where he succeeded Shelley Moore Capito on January 3, 2015 , who moved to the US Senate . Since he was confirmed in office in 2016, he will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States, which meets on January 3, 2017 . His new legislative period runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018. He is or was a member of the Committee on Natural Resources and the Budget Committee .
