William Smith O'Brien (politician, 1862)

William Smith O'Brien (born January 8, 1862 in Philippi , West Virginia , †  August 10, 1948 in Buckhannon , West Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1927 and 1929 he represented the third constituency of the state of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William O'Brien attended public schools in his home country and then Weston Academy and West Virginia University in Morgantown . He then worked as a teacher, newspaper publisher, on farms and in factories, before he began to study law. After his admission to the bar in 1892, he began working in his new profession in Buckhannon. He was also a captain in the West Virginia National Guard between 1894 and 1895 . From 1913 to 1919, O'Brien served as a judge in the state's twelfth judicial district.

O'Brien was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1926 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the third district of West Virginia , where he succeeded Republican John M. Wolverton on March 4, 1927 . Since he lost to Wolverton in the 1928 elections, he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1929 . After serving in the House of Representatives, O'Brien returned to practice as a lawyer. From 1932 until his death in 1948, he served as Secretary of State, executive officer of the state government of West Virginia.
