Sobieski Brady

Sobieski Brady (* 28. November 1816 in Pennsylvania ; † 17th September 1888 in Wheeling , West Virginia ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party , among others from 1877 to 1881 Secretary of State of the State of West Virginia was.

Life

Brady, who had little education, began his professional career in 1832 at the age of 16 as a clerk at a bank in Carlisle before moving to Philadelphia in 1865 to work for Farmer's & Merchant's Bank . In the following years he expanded his knowledge of banking and finance and held positions in various financial institutions of the time for several years. In 1837 he was appointed cashier at the Merchant & Merchant's Bank in Wheeling and over the years came into contact with numerous influential personalities. In addition to his professional career, he was involved in local politics and was a member of the Wheeling City Council for several years. He held the office of Mayor of Wheeling from June 1848 to January 1850, from January 1853 to January 1855 and most recently from January 1868 to January 1869 .

On June 30, 1876 Brady was the governor of West Virginia John J. Jacob of Finance (Treasurer) appointed the state, the tenure of John Burdett to end until 1877 after it as part of an impeachment procedure (impeachment) had been deposed. He was then elected in 1877 by the new Governor Henry Matthews to succeed Charles Hedrick as the seventh Secretary of State of West Virginia and held this office until the end of Governor Matthews' term in 1881. Randolph Stalnaker was his successor .
