Ernst Gallerach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernst Gallerach (born March 7, 1930 in Podletitz , † 1991 ) was a German manager. He was General Director of VEB Carl Zeiss Jena from 1966 to 1971. In addition, from 1963 to 1971 he was a member of the People's Chamber of the GDR and at times a candidate or member of the Central Committee of the SED .

Life

Gallerach was born on March 7, 1930 in the Sudeten German Podletitz as the son of a craftsman. After attending elementary and middle school, his family had to leave their home area soon after the end of the war and settled in the Soviet occupation zone . In 1948 Gallerach was admitted to the Workers and Farmers Faculty (ABF) in Halle , where he graduated from high school in 1950. His entry into the SED in 1948 was certainly conducive to acceptance. After the ABF, Gallerach was delegated to the Berlin School of Economics , where he studied until 1954 and graduated with a degree in economics. He then found a job in the Magdeburg measuring device and armatures factory Karl Marx , where he slowly worked his way up from 1954. Initially he was assistant to the planning manager, from 1955 planning manager and from 1959 to 1962 plant manager at MAM (successor to Willi Schneider). In his function as plant manager, Gallerach belonged to the SED city management and also the SED district management Magdeburg from 1960 .

In the autumn of 1962 Ernst Gallerach was replaced as plant manager and the economic functionary Willi Schneider was reinstated in this position. Gallerach moved to the flagship company VEB Carl Zeiss Jena as 1st Deputy General Director. This position in the most important device manufacturing company in the GDR also resulted in influential party offices for Gallerach. In 1963 he was put up both as a candidate for the People's Chamber elections and as a candidate for the Central Committee of the SED. When Hugo Schrade , who had headed the plant for almost 20 years, was retired in 1966 , Gallerach took over Carl Zeiss as General Director. At the same time he was also elected president of the newly founded football club FC Carl Zeiss Jena , which won two of three GDR championships during his presidency. In 1967 Gallerach's position was honored internally at the Seventh Party Congress of the SED with the fact that he was now elected as a member of the SED Central Committee. From 1969, however, it became clear that Carl Zeiss, under Gallerach's leadership, was no longer able to achieve the specified development goals and deadlines were no longer met. An investigation scheduled for the end of 1969 revealed enormous contract backlogs. Accordingly, Gallerach's dismissal was demanded very soon in the Council of Ministers. Initially, the only reaction was to take measures to promote the party. A resignation offered by Gallerach was initially not accepted. As a result, the management structure within Carl Zeiss was reformed from mid-1970, but this did not lead to the hoped-for success. In February 1971 Gallerach had to admit to the Council of Ministers that the economic indicators were pointing further down. Added to this were his health problems, which were also related to excessive alcohol consumption. During the conversation in the Council of Ministers, he then offered his resignation again. Gallerach then went to a spa stay and did not return to his general director post. In the decision of the Council of Ministers to replace him, tendencies towards arrogance and complacency were attested to. This dismissal was accompanied by a political cold position. Gallerach was no longer a candidate for the People's Chamber elections in 1971 and was not re-elected to the SED Central Committee at the 8th Party Congress of the SED in June 1971. After a certain time, he was again entrusted with a management post. Gallerach became operations director of his old, meanwhile independent "VEB Erich Weinert" Magdeburg.

Ernst Gallerach died in 1991 at the age of 61.
