the accident

In Kédange station , on the French section of the Völklingen – Thionville railway line , a freight train stopped on an overtaking track to allow a military transport to pass. This military train consisted of eight occupied passenger cars , then four empty cars and then tank cars in which a flammable liquid (probably fuel) was transported.

Due to an error by the employee in the signal box , the military train was also directed to the overtaking track that was still occupied by the freight train. The trains collided and a fire broke out that, despite the empty guard wagons, spread to the occupied cars.
