George William Johnson
George William Johnson (born November 10, 1869 in Charles Town , Jefferson County , West Virginia , † February 24, 1944 in Martinsburg , West Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1923 and 1925 and again between 1933 and 1943 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives .
Career
George Johnson attended public schools in his home country including Shepherd College in Shepherdstown . He then studied law until 1896 at West Virginia University in Morgantown, among other things. After his admission to the bar that same year, Johnson began working in his new profession in Martinsburg, Berkeley County . At the same time he became the legal representative of this city. Between 1897 and 1900 he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the State Normal School . In 1900 he moved his residence and his office to Parkersburg . In the years that followed, he was a bankruptcy administrator on behalf of the West Virginia federal court. Johnson was also an advisor to the West Virginia Public Service Commission. In addition to these activities, he also devoted himself to fruit growing and livestock.
Johnson was a member of the Democratic Party and was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in 1922 as its candidate in the fourth district of West Virginia . There he took over on March 4, 1923, succeeding Republican Harry C. Woodyard , whom he had defeated in the election. But since he lost to Woodyard in the next election in 1924, Johnson could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1925 . In the following years he returned to his earlier business. In the 1932 election he was re-elected to Congress for the fourth constituency. He benefited from a nationwide trend in favor of his party. On March 3, 1933, he replaced Republican Robert Lynn Hogg in the House of Representatives. After four re-elections, he was able to spend five legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 1943. During this time, most of the New Deal laws were passed there. His last term of office was determined by the events of the Second World War . In the 1942 election, Johnson was defeated by Republican Hubert Summers Ellis . George Johnson died on February 24, 1944 in Martinsburg and was buried in his birthplace, Charles Town.
