Martinsburg is a city in the Eastern Panhandle region of the US state West Virginia and the county seat of Berkeley County .

Martinsburg is located about 148 km north-west of Washington, DC The US Highway 11 runs through the city center and Interstate 81 runs along the north side of town over.
history
The place was founded in 1778 by General Adam Stephen , who baptized it Martinsburg in honor of the landowner Colonel Thomas Bryan Martin, a nephew of Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron .
Aspen Hall is a Georgian mansion, the oldest part of which was built by Edward Beeson, Sr. in 1745. This makes it the oldest house in town. Aspen Hall and the people who lived there played a vital role in the development of agriculture, religion, transportation and politics in the area. Significant events related to the Seven Years' War , the American Revolution and the Civil War took place on the property. Three of the original buildings remain, including the rare log cabin from Mendenhall's Fort .
The first post office in what is now West Virginia was established in Martinsburg in 1792. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad reached Martinsburg in 1842. The first B&O engine shed and station complex was built in 1849. In 1863, Isabelle "Belle" Boyd , a famous spy for the Confederation , was arrested by the Northern Army in Martinsburg .
The city of Martinsburg was created on March 30, 1868 by the West Virginia Legislature .
The great rail strike of 1877 began on July 14, 1877 in Martinsburg and spread across the whole country. Telephone service was first offered in 1883. In 1889 electricity was set up under a license from the United Edison Manufacturing Company of New York . The Intervowen company started its activities in Martinsburg in 1891 and developed into the world's largest manufacturer of men's stockings.
Construction of the Apollo Civic Theater was completed in 1913.
Over a thousand men from Berkeley County took part in World War I. Of these, 41 were killed and 21 wounded in combat. A tomb for those who died in battle was erected in 1925.
During the Second World War, Newton D. Baker Hospital in Martinsburg treated thousands of soldiers who were wounded in the war. In 1946 this army hospital became part of the Veterans Administration . The Veterans Administration Medical Center in Martinsburg is still operating and providing care for veterans .
Starting in the late 1940s and during the 1950s, many mills and factories in Martinsburg closed. This is a major blow to the local economy.

At the time of the 2000 United States Census , Martinsburg had 14,972 people, 6,684 households and 3,689 families. The population density was 1,149 per km². There were 7,432 residential units with an average settlement density of 571 per km². 83.9% of the population were white, 11.63% African American, 0.4% American Indian, 0.63% Asian American, 0.02% Pacific islander, 1.26% other racial, and 2.17% belonging to two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.91% of the population.
23.1% were younger than 18, 9.6% were between 18 and 24 years old, 28.7% were between 25 and 44 years old, 22.3% were between 45 and 64 years old, and 16.4% were 65 or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 women there were 91 men. For every 100 women of full age there were 89 men.
The median household income was $ 29,495 and the median household income for a family was $ 36,954. Men had a median income of $ 29,697; women had a median income of $ 22,212. The per capita income was $ 16,314. About 14.7% of all families and 20% of the population were below the poverty line , including 28.8% of all minors and 15.1% of all who were 65 or older.
