Garland Lorenzo Wilson (born June 13, 1909 in Martinsburg , West Virginia , † May 31, 1954 in Paris ) was an American pianist of boogie woogie and stride piano .

biography

Garland Wilson graduated from Howard University in Washington, DC and worked in New York City nightclubs in the 1930s . In 1932 Wilson accompanied the singer Nina Mae McKinney on a European tour. During this time, Wilson worked with various bands in England and made several records with Nat Gonella and Jack Payne .

In Paris in 1935 recordings were made with the French singer Jean Sablon and the guitarist Django Reinhardt ; he also recorded records with Michel Warlop (" Limehouse Blues "). In 1939 he returned to the United States, where he stayed until 1951 and then finally moved to London (1952/3) and then to Paris. This year also recordings with Danny Polo , Herman Chittison , Emmanuel Soudieux and Nina Mae McKinney were made.

Well-known titles of his were " Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen ", "Memories of You" and "Rockin 'Chair", which had appeared on Okeh . His compositions were "Blues En Si Bemol", "The Blues Got Me", "The Way Feel" and "You Rascal You".

Producer John Hammond's career began in 1931 with Garland Wilson recording for Columbia Records .
