Herman Chittison

Herman "Ivory" Chittison (born October 15, 1908 in Flemingsburg , Kentucky , † March 8, 1967 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was an American swing jazz pianist .

Chittison taught himself to play the piano and from 1928 played with the band of Zack Whyte in Cincinnati . He accompanied the blues singers Adelaide Hall and Ethel Waters , toured with comedian Stepin Fetchit , played with Clarence Williams and went to Europe in 1932. There he played in 1934 with Louis Armstrong (recordings for Pathé Brunswick) and from 1935 to 1939 in the orchestra of Willie Lewis . In 1938 he recorded " My Melancholy Baby " for the Swing label . He has recorded with both Willie Lewis and Solo, Eddie Brunner and Bill Coleman . Before the occupation of France he fled to Egypt, where he played for two years with his own band, in which u. a. Bill Coleman was. He even played in India. From 1941 he had his own trio in the USA (with Carl Lynch , among others ), with whom he also made recordings (with the singer Thelma Carpenter 1944/5). Chittison also recorded with Mildred Bailey in 1941 . He played in New York in the 1950s and still performed in Cleveland in the 1960s (with singer Irene Williams , daughter of Clarence Williams), where he died of lung cancer. Shortly before, he had married.
