Carl Lynch
Carl Lynch (* around 1920) was an American rhythm & blues and jazz guitarist who made a name for himself as a rhythm guitarist in productions by Phil Spector and in recordings by James Brown and Nina Simone .
Live and act
Lynch played from the early 1940s in the backing band of the singer and pianist Olie Shepard , with whom the first recordings for OKeh were made in 1942 , which however remained unpublished. In the following years he worked a. a. in the trio of pianist Herman Chittison , in whose recordings he was involved with Pearl Bailey and Thelma Carpenter , from 1947 also with Connee Boswell , Jerry Jerome , Pete Johnson and Freddie Washington .
In the 1950s and 1960s, Lynch worked as a freelance musician in New York with Mercer Ellington , Leroy Glover & Wally Richardson , Curly Hamner , Cootie Williams , Ruth Brown , Dud Bascomb , LaVern Baker , Sam "The Man" Taylor , King Curtis , Buddy Lucas , Taft Jordan , Rhoda Scott , Johnny Hodges , Joan Toliver , Solomon Burke , Esther Phillips , JJ Johnson , Les McCann , George Benson , Hank Crawford , Jerome Richardson , Jimmy Smith , Arthur Prysock and Dizzy Gillespie . As a rhythm guitarist he is also on recordings with the Isley Brothers ("Move Over and Let Me Dance", with Jimi Hendrix ), James Brown ("Say It Loud: I'm Black and I'm Proud") and Nina Simone ("Young “Gifted and Black”); on Phil Spector's studio productions , he worked with Billy Butler , Russ Savakus and Dick Romoff .
In the 1970s and 1980s Lynch was still involved in recordings by Percy Mayfield , Eric Gale , Charles McPherson , Marlena Shaw , Jimmy Owens , Bunky Green , James Moody and most recently in 1990 with Ellis Larkins ( Sweet Soul ); in the field of jazz, Tom Lord lists him in 78 recording sessions between 1942 and 1989.
George Benson counts Carl Lynch among his sponsors; in his autobiography, Benson mentions how Lynch encouraged him to become a professional guitarist.
