Everett Barksdale

Everett Barksdale (* 28. April 1910 in Detroit ; † 29. January 1986 in Inglewood , California ) was an American jazz guitarist of Swing .

Live and act

Everett Barksdale first learned alto saxophone , guitar and bass . He moved to Chicago and began his career with Erskine Tate in the early 1930s . He then played with Eddie South , and later with Benny Carter . In the 1940s Barksdale settled in New York and divided his professional activities into playing with smaller jazz combos in clubs (including with the pianist Benny Payne ) and working as a studio musician; so he was employed from 1942 to 1944 for the radio station CBS . He worked with producer Joe Davis until the 1950s and participated in recordings of vocal groups such as The Blenders and The Clovers . He was also an accompanist for Maxine Sullivan and Dean Barlow . Like his colleague, bassist Milton Hinton , with whom he often collaborated, Barksdale has now often requested as a valued rhythm guitarist for studio sessions in a variety of musical genres, from doo-wop , rhythm and blues , early rock 'n' roll up to pop music . He delivered the blues lick for the hit Love Is Strange by Mickey & Sylvia.

In the late 1940s, he had the opportunity to replace Tiny Grimes in the trio of pianist Art Tatum . Together with the bassist Slam Stewart , the formation became one of the most legendary jazz trios of the time. He worked at Art Tatum until 1955; In 1956 he toured Europe and Canada as musical director and arranger with Billy Kelly and the Ink Spots . In 1956 he worked again at Tatum; after his death he was u. a. 1958/59 employed in the studio band for the American Broadcasting Company . Here he worked on recordings by Lena Horne , Sammy Davis Jr. and Sarah Vaughan . Occasionally he also took part in jazz recording sessions, such as with Buddy Tate in 1958/59. In the 1970s he was still a sought-after studio musician in California before retiring at the end of the decade.

Barksdale has also worked on recordings of Henry Red Allen , Louis Armstrong , Chet Baker , Sidney Bechet , Benny Carter , Chris Connor , Al Hirt , Johnny Hodges , Billie Holiday , Rex Stewart , Edmond Hall and Jimmy Rushing .
