Billy Kelly (born May 1, 1945 in Kilkenny ), rarely also Bill Kelly , is a former Irish snooker player who was a professional player for thirteen seasons between 1981 and 1994. During this time he reached the quarter-finals of the Irish Professional Championship three times (but once he was placed directly for this round), the round of the last 32 of the 1982 International Open and 44th in the world snooker rankings .

Career

Kelly was born in Kilkenny in 1945 and moved to Manchester when she was around 16 . He later married and had three daughters. He first attracted attention when he reached the quarterfinals of qualifying for the English Amateur Championship in 1979 , but was defeated by Colin Roscoe . A year later he lost to Steve Duggan in the round of 16 . In the same year he took part in the Professional Ticket Event and made it to the semi-finals, but then lost to his compatriot Eugene Hughes . In May 1981 he became a professional player.

First professional years

Kelly's first professional season was the 1981/82 season , in which he could not win a single game. As a result, he did not succeed in placing himself on the world rankings. The next season , however, he began with two wins over Geoff Foulds and Ian Williamson at the International Open , so that he reached the first main round and the round of the last 32, but there lost to Alex Higgins . Thanks to a victory over the sick Jack Fitzmaurice, he also reached that round at the UK Championship , which at that time, unlike the International Open, was not a ranking tournament. He was able to win further victories against old master Fred Davis in the pre-qualification group stage of the International Masters and against Bert Demarco in the qualification for the World Snooker Championship. At the end of the season he was finally led to 44th place in the world; the best place in his career.

The next season , however, was again more marked by defeats; Kelly only won a few games at the International Masters . There he survived the qualifying group stage with two wins over Jim Meadowcroft and Ian Williamson, but could not even win a frame in the first group stage of the main round in a group with Steve Davis and Doug Mountjoy . At the end of the season, he slipped to 59th place in the world rankings. In the 1984/85 season , Kelly managed to win at least one game in two tournaments. At the International Open he moved into the round of 48 with wins over John Hargreaves and Warren King and lost to Silvino Francisco before defeating Paul Watchorn at the Irish Professional Championship and losing to Eugene Hughes in the subsequent quarter-finals. Nevertheless, he had to accept a deterioration in the world rankings to 71st.

Relegation from the top 100

Also in the 1985/86 season Kelly managed to win an opening game in two tournaments. He reached the round of the last 64 of the Grand Prix thanks to a victory over Jim Donnelly , but lost there against Silvino Francisco , and with a win over Jackie Rea the quarterfinals of the Irish Professional Championship , in which he had to admit defeat to Dennis Taylor . Nevertheless, he slipped to 88th place in the world rankings. Even if he reached a round of the last 96 four times in the next season and then retired, this development intensified so that he was only placed in 102nd place.

In the 1987/88 season Kelly could only show three appearances in a round of the last 96, where he was eliminated every time. He didn't even have one of these three laps on his own, as he benefited from Bernie Mikkelsen's abandonment without a fight at the Grand Prix . As a result of these failures, he lost another eight places on the world rankings. The following season was identical , in which he was able to reach the round of 96 on his own twice and this time benefited from Paul Gibson's non-fighting task at the Canadian Masters . Nevertheless, he continued to lose ground on the world rankings, this time he lost nine more places and was only ranked 119th.

Last professional years

The 1989/90 season went a little better for Kelly when he reached the round of 96 four times on his own, but otherwise lost all games. As a result, he again lost seven places on the world rankings. In the next season he reduced his tournament participation, but was less successful. In a total of five tournaments he managed only once - at the British Open - to get into the round of 96, where he missed the main round against David Roe . At the end of the season he was ranked 127th. But after he could not win a single game in the 1991/92 season despite more participations, he fell to rank 188. In the following he did not play any other professional games, so that he later fell to 334th place. As a result, ended his professional career in 1994.

Further life

Between 2002 and 2013 Kelly took part in the qualification for the Snooker World Championship as an amateur several times , but never won a game. In 2013 he also tried his luck at the World Seniors Championship , but was also immediately beaten.

Style of play

In a Belfast Telegraph article , Kelly is described as a "left-handed man with a deadly flair for punching" (literally, "with a deadly guiding eye," an important part of the ball sighting technique) who can help attract fans.
