The Strongbow Irish Professional Championship 1985 was a professional snooker tournament without influence on the world rankings to determine the Irish or Northern Irish professional champions. The tournament was played as part of the 1984/85 season from April 8 to 11, 1985 in Ulster Hall in Dublin , Northern Ireland , where it returned after two events in Coleraine. The winner was Dennis Taylor , who won his fourth win at this tournament with a 10: 5 win over defending champion Alex Higgins . In return, Higgins played the tournament's highest break with a 136 break.

After there had been no event the year before due to the loss of the sponsor, there was again a sponsor with Strongbow Cider and thus a new event.

Compared to the last event in 1983, the prize money increased by about a third of the then prize money to 19,600 pounds sterling , of which about a third went to the winner.

McLaughlin joined seven other players in the second round, and these four winners met the rest of the field in the quarter-finals. final

This final pairing had already existed in 1982 and 1983 as well as in earlier editions, in 1982 Taylor had won his third title in a row, in 1983 Higgins had clinched his fifth tournament victory. Both players had survived the quarter-finals through white-washs , but in the semifinals Taylor had only won the victory over Eugene Hughes in the decider , while Higgins had defeated Patsy Fagan 6-3.

At the start of the match, Taylor went 2-0 and a 106 break 4-1 before Higgins reduced the lead to 4-3. By further higher breaks Taylor prevented the equalizer and took the lead 8: 3 before Higgins won another frame. With a 96 break, the following frame went back to Taylor before Higgins restored the old distance. But with an 83 break, Taylor won the 15th frame of the game with 101: 8 and thus won both the match and the tournament.

For Taylor it was the fourth victory in the tournament. While his renewed opponent Higgins had already won two world championships (1972 and 1982), Taylor won the 1985 World Snooker Championship, which took place a few weeks after this final .
