The 1985 Dulux British Open was a snooker tournament of the 1984/85 season that was played in Derby from February 16 to March 2 . The Assembly Rooms in the city in Central England had already proven themselves over the past five years as a venue for professional tournaments in a smaller format. This year, a new tournament was set up under the name British Open, in which players played for world ranking points and in which all professionals could take part.
The first final of the British Open was contested by two non-British: The South African Silvino Francisco defeated the Canadian Kirk Stevens 12: 9. Apart from the South Africa professional championship , it was the only title for Francisco in his professional career.
Main tournament
The players from 33rd place in the world rankings held a qualifying round in advance. The 32 qualifiers were then drawn into the top 32 of the ranking in the first main round. In the qualification including the first main round, 6 winning frames (mode Best of 11 ) were played. In the TV phase from round 2 onwards only the best of 9 was valid, the semi-finals were decided with 9 frames won, in the final even 12 frames were necessary for victory (best of 23).
