James Giannaros (born July 25, 1952 ) is a former Australian snooker and English billiards player who, after winning the Australian Snooker Championship in 1982, spent a total of nine years as a professional snooker player between the following year and 1992.

Career

Beginnings as an amateur

Giannaros, who comes from Tasmania , won the Tasmanian Snooker Championship in 1980 with a win over John Hanson as well as the Tasmanian English Billiards Championship with a win over Harold Roberts-Thompson - after beating the former in the finals in 1976 and 1979 Ron Atkins had lost - while finishing second behind Warren King in the Australian Snooker Championship and losing to Ron Atkins in the quarter-finals of the Amateur World Championship . A year later he lost at both Tasmanian championships against the player against whom he had won his previous year's title in the final. But in 1982 Giannaros succeeded in each case with a victory over John Hanson and over John Reece again to win the two Tasmanian championships before he won the Australian snooker championship with a victory over Warren King. He also took part in the amateur world championship again in 1982 , but was eliminated in the group stage. Shortly afterwards, at the beginning of the 1983/84 season , Giannaros became a professional player.

Professional years

After Giannaros only participated in the qualification for the Snooker World Championship during his first professional season and had to admit defeat there in his opening game with 1:10 Les Dodd , he increased the number of his tournament participations to four with the next season and reached the Australian Professional Championship the quarterfinals as well as the Classic and the British Open with a victory over Tony Chappel and Colin Roscoe the round of 64, in which he was eliminated, while he lost his opening game against Steve Longworth again 1:10 at the World Snooker Championship . As a result, he was ranked 101 on the world rankings , his best world ranking.

While he gave up his qualifying game at the World Snooker Championship without a fight in the 1985/86 season and reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Professional Championship with a win over Lou Condo , he only took part in the Australian Professional Championship during the next season and lost to Lou Condo Opening game. While he was ranked 124th in the world rankings in the 1987/88 season , he was not able to win a single opening game in three tournaments in the 1988/89 season as an unset player . As a result, he did not play a game, but returned to the world rankings during the 1991/92 season and finished 156th before ending his professional career at the end of that season. Giannaros later appeared as a snooker trainer.
