The St. Nicolai Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Schnackenburg in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district in Lower Saxony . It is located in the city center and belongs to the Lüchow-Dannenberg parish .

history

The church was probably built in brick in Romanesque style around 1200 . The construction could be related to the foundation of the Arendsee Monastery in 1184. A connection results from the mention of the customs officer Reynold von Schnackenburg in the directory of the former benefactors of the Arendsee Monastery. As boatmen and merchants lived in Schnackenburg, the church was dedicated to St. Nicholas . In addition, the city was the seat of a provost named Nikolaus in 1284 . This was probably used by the Diocese of Verden , to which Schnackenburg was part of the church. The provost's seat was moved to Lüchow at a later date . During the devastating city fires in Schnackenburg, which occurred in 1624, 1635, 1674 and 1728, the church was probably spared because of its massive stone construction. The tower hood was renewed in 1750, as indicated by a plaque above the tower entrance. In 1777, the so-called bridal entrance was added to the nave in the south after two older porches were demolished there and under the tower. At the end of the 18th century, the church windows were adapted to contemporary tastes. Extensive renovation work was carried out on the church building in 2016 and 2017.

Description and equipment

The outside of the church is kept simple. In the high interior, the walls as well as the columns are painted white. The ceiling has gold colors. The altar is mainly white and blue with gold accents. In the middle of the altar there is a figure of Jesus on the cross in front of a white and gold cross. The organ consists of white and gold elements. The benches are designed in a striking blue. When the walls were to be repainted in 1894, the plaster was first removed and remains of medieval paintings, depicting biblical scenes and Christ's ordeal, came to light. These were not documented.

Baptism angel

Baptism angel

The baptismal angel came to the Schnackenburg church around 1727 and has been its trademark ever since. The figure is reminiscent of the figurehead of a ship. The wooden shell in the angel's hands is provided with a brass bowl that holds the baptismal water. For the baptism, the baptismal angel descends pictorially, which enables a roller device in the church ceiling. Another baptism angel is about five kilometers away in the church in Lanz in Brandenburg across the Elbe .

organ

On the west gallery, also from 1727, is the organ , which was built in 1875 by the organ builder Rohlfing from Osnabrück .

Bells

Originally the church had six bells. These and two other bells were lost during the two world wars for metal extraction for military purposes. The oldest bell in the church tower dates from the 14th century.

Tombstones

There are several baroque tombstones on the outside walls of the church, most of which are reminiscent of the customs officers buried here. The youngest stone was discovered in a town house in 2005 and reminds of a young woman from Salzwedel who died here in 1730.
