The South African Professional Championship was a snooker tournament to determine the national snooker champion of South Africa.
history
The competition was first held in 1948. Until 1984 there were only five different winners with Peter Mans , Freddie van Rensberg , Perrie Mans , Derek Mienie and Jimmy van Rensberg . The competition mode was changed again and again, but the records from this period are incomplete.
From 1985 the competition was financially supported by the world association WPBSA . In the other leading snooker nations (England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and Australia) corresponding championships were financed by the world association between 1985 and 1989 (see section see also ). Only players from the respective country were eligible to participate, so there were no points for the snooker world rankings .
Neither the venue nor the winners are known for the years 1985/86. In 1987 and 1989 the tournament took place in Johannesburg and in 1988 in Germiston . With the end of the funding by the WPBSA from 1988/89, the competition was discontinued.
