The Padmore / Super Crystalate International was a snooker tournament during the 1979/80 season . The invitation tournament was held once and took place in January 1980 at the Gala Baths in West Bromwich .
The tournament almost never happened because the original sponsor withdrew four days before the start. At short notice, the organizer Mike Watterson found two companies that were financially involved, and the players competed, although the prize money was only a third of the planned amount.
The tournament winner was the Northern Irishman Alex Higgins . Although he caught a cold and suffered from an ear infection, he defeated the South African Perrie Mans 4-2 in the final.
Prize money
Originally £ 15,000 was planned as prize money. After the sponsor's cancellation, only £ 5,000 came in at short notice from two small sponsors.
