The Gaware Paints Bombay International was a twice been transmitted in 1979 Snooker -Einladungsturnier. In both cases, the tournament was sponsored by the Indian company Gaware Paints in the Bombay Gymkhana in the Indian city of Bombay , today's Mumbai; in the 1978/79 season as a round-robin tournament with six players, in the 1979/80 season as an elimination tournament preceded by a group stage with two groups. While the three-time world champion John Spencer from England won the first edition, his compatriot John Virgo won the second edition . In the course of the second edition, the Canadian Cliff Thorburn also played the highest break in tournament history with a 123 break.

history

The first edition of the tournament took place at the end of the 1978/79 season in February 1979 in the Bombay Gymkhana - gymkhanas are roughly the Indian variant of a gentlemen's club . Five of the leading professional players and the Indian amateur player Arvind Savur were invited to the tournament . The tournament was held as a round-robin tournament, so that everyone had to play against each other player once. The tournament, which totaled £ 5,400 in prize money , was ultimately won by John Spencer , who finished first in the group ahead of Dennis Taylor .

The second edition took place in mid-December of the same year and can therefore be assigned to the 1979/80 season . Again, the tournament was held in the Bombay Gymkhana and sponsored by Gaware Paints , but at the same time the prize money rose to £ 5,700, which, unlike the previous year, was only divided between the first two players. This time seven leading professional players and again Arvind Savur were invited as an Indian amateur. In a first round, the players were divided into two groups of four, who now played in the everyone-versus-everyone mode, as in the previous year. The two best players in each group advanced to the semi-finals, from which they played for victory in the knockout system . The tournament was finally won again by an Englishman, John Virgo , who defeated Cliff Thorburn 13: 7 in the final. Thorburn, however, had played the highest break of the tournament with a 123 break during the tournament and at the same time surpassed his previous year's record of 108 points. Apart from that, the following year is given as the tournament date. No further editions took place afterwards.
