The Matchroom Professional Championship (also known as the Matchroom Trophy in the years 1986 and 1987 ) was a professional snooker tournament with the status of an invitation tournament that was held three times in the 1980s . It took place between 1986 and 1988 in the Cliffs Pavilion in the English coastal town of Southend-on-Sea, east of London . Willie Thorne , Dennis Taylor and Steve Davis are all record winners of the tournament with one win each ; Taylor also played the highest break in tournament history with a 141 break.

history

In the 1980s, many of the world's top players were under contract with Barry Hearn's management company Matchroom Sport . With the Matchroom Professional Championship, a separate championship took place for these players, so to speak. The first edition of the tournament took place in mid-September 1986, as did the subsequent editions, in the Cliffs Pavilion in Southend-on-Sea . The edition, like the following edition, is sometimes referred to as the Matchroom Trophy 1986. Six players took part, playing for a total of £ 100,000 in prize money, even though the tournament was not sponsored. The winner of the tournament was Willie Thorne , who defeated Steve Davis 10: 9 in the final . Thorne also played the highest break of the tournament with a 137 break.

In 1987 the tournament took place in around October with seven players and prize money of £ 125,000 again without a sponsor at the same venue. Thorne reached the final again, but lost 3:10 to Dennis Taylor . With a 141 break, he also played the highest break in the edition and at the same time in tournament history. One year later, the tournament had a sponsor for the first time with LEP , but most parameters including the prize money remained the same, even if the number of participants increased to eight players. Last year's winner, Dennis Taylor, reached the final again and again had to admit defeat to his opponent; Steve Davis emerged as the tournament winner thanks to a 10-7 win. He also played the highest break with a 132 break. The tournament was then discontinued.
