The Scottish Open is a snooker ranking tournament of the Snooker Main Tour .

history

The tournament was first held in 1998 when the Scottish Open replaced the International Open in the tournament calendar of the Snooker Main Tour . From the beginning there were points for the snooker world rankings - in contrast to the traditional Scottish Masters , which was an invitation tournament.

The venue for the first five years was Aberdeen , after which the tournament was held once in Edinburgh and Glasgow before it disappeared from the calendar of the Main Tour for the time being. In 2004 the tournament was officially called the Players Championship and was sponsored by Daily Record . Prize money for the winner in 1998 was £ 60,000, increasing to £ 82,500 by 2004.

In 2012 the Scottish Open was revived as one of six so-called minor ranking tournaments, the new edition of the European Tour 2012/13 took place in Ravenscraig (near Motherwell ).

The record winner with two titles is Ronnie O'Sullivan , who also scored a maximum break against Quinten Hann in 2000 . In the same year, Stephen Maguire also managed a maximum in qualifying against Phaitoon Phonbun . In 2012 the Norwegian Kurt Maflin managed another break of 147 points at the Scottish Open.

As part of the Home Nations Series , the tournament was revived in the 2016/17 season and held for the first time in Glasgow from December 12th to 18th, 2016.

The trophy to be won is called the Hendry Trophy and is named after the multiple snooker world champion Stephen Hendry .
