The Saxifraga cotyledon ( Saxifraga cotyledon ) is a species in the genus saxifrage ( Saxifraga ) in the family Saxifragaceae (Saxifragaceae).

features

The ostrich saxifrage is a perennial plant that reaches heights of 20 to 80 centimeters. The stately plant forms rosettes up to 15 centimeters wide. The rosette leaves are 20 to 60 millimeters long, 10 to 15 millimeters wide and widen towards the front. They are prickly or blunt , leathery and have forward-facing saw teeth and fine calcareous scales. The stem is upright to overhanging, densely glandular and forms the panicley, branched, pyramidal inflorescence almost from the base . The petals are white, egg-shaped and 6 to 11 millimeters in size.

Flowering time is from June to August.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 28.

Occurrence

The ostrich saxifrage occurs in the Pyrenees , the Alps and in Northern Europe (Scandinavia and Iceland) in damp rock crevices on silicate from valleys to altitudes of 2600 meters. It occurs in companies of the Androsacion vandellii association.
