The Hong Kong Challenge was a snooker tournament that was held two times in 1990 and 1991, without any influence on the world rankings ( non-ranking tournament ). The tournament took place both in the 1990/91 season and in the 1991/92 season as part of the World Series sponsored by 555 at the Hilton Hotel in Hong Kong , which was then a British Crown Colony . Twelve players were invited for the first edition and sixteen for the second edition, who determined the winner in the knockout system . While the Thai James Wattana won 9-3 in the first edition , the defending champion lost 9-1 to Stephen Hendry in the second edition in the final . However, Wattana already played the highest break in tournament history in the first edition with a 127 break.
history
The first edition of the tournament took place at the end of August 1990 with twelve participants in the Hilton Hotel in Hong Kong. The tournament was of 555 sponsored and was part of the World Series of Barry Hearn's Matchroom Sport . The total prize money was £ 71,000 . Eight of the participants played a first round consisting of a total of four games, the winners of which each met one of the remaining four participants in the quarter-finals. The tournament was finally won by James Wattana from Thailand, who defeated Jimmy White 9: 3 in the final. At the same time he played the highest break of the tournament with a 127 break.
The second edition of the tournament was held again at the Hilton Hotel and was sponsored by 555 , but the total prize money was down to £ 59,000 despite the increase to 16 participants. Nevertheless, the tournament remained part of the World Series . This time, the sixteen participants all played for the title in the knockout system right from the start . James Wattana reached the final again and met his young rival Stephen Hendry , who was almost the same age , who clearly defeated him 9-1. The highest break this time was played by the Englishman Gary Wilkinson , whose 125cc break, however, could not surpass the previous year's record.
