Tournament course
For the first time in several years there was a professional snooker tournament on South African soil. The number of participants in the tournament was eight players, six of which were among the top eight players in the world rankings . There were also two other South African professionals, the brothers Silvino and Mannie Francisco - besides Perrie Mans , who, however, had limited experience due to a lack of participation in tournaments outside of South Africa. The eight participants played in a knockout system for the title, with the quarter-finals being played in the best of 15 frames mode, the semi-finals in the best of 31 frames mode and the final in the best of 45 frames mode .

Endgame
Eddie Charlton had reached the final of the World Snooker Championship three times in the past decade and beyond, but always lost, so he only had a few titles in Pot Black and other tournaments. In contrast, there was his final opponent John Spencer , who was three times world champion in addition to numerous other tournaments. Even if no exact results of individual frames are known, it is known that Charlton not only played a 108 break, but also won the tournament with 23:19 and thus his first major international title.
