final
With the Northern Irishman Alex Higgins and the Welshman Ray Reardon , two of the best players in the world met in the final: Both of them were in the top three places in the Order of Merit and had already won world championships. The last time the two players faced each other was in the 1976 World Snooker Championship final , when Reardon won the World Cup for the fifth time.
The first frames of the game were competitive when Reardon took the lead with high breaks and Higgins always equalized. Only when the score was 3: 3 did Higgins take the lead for the first time and win the two following frames. Reardon was able to shorten it to 5: 4, but did not make it into the decider with a 55:65 defeat in the tenth frame , so that Higgins won the final and thus the tournament with 6: 4.
