history

As in the USA, the settlers of that time in Canada made their first attempts at burning in the 17th century, especially with rye. In contrast, whiskey production in Canada has long been overshadowed by US. This only changed around 1860 when the American Hiram Walker, who came from Douglas (Massachusetts), immigrated and founded his first distillery in Ontario - in what would later become Walkersville . Hiram Walker made his name a brand and printed “Hiram Walker” on his kegs and bottles. This was a kind of revolution in brand strategy at the time. Walker was particularly popular in clubs and restaurants . Walker then added the name "Club" to his product. In the 1880s, Walker expanded his delivery area to the United States . Walker had an incredible success there too, whereupon the American whiskey manufacturers forced him to label his products with the designation "Canadian". From then on his whiskey was called "Canadian Club". The Prohibition in 1919 in the US was a unique opportunity for Canadian whiskey. Because of this success and its fame, the whiskey was offered in several countries.

Walker's company was bought out in 1987 by Allied Lyons , a British company, which shortly thereafter merged with the Spanish group of companies (Allied) Domecq .
