John Virgo (born March 3, 1946 in Salford ) is a former English snooker player and television presenter, commentator and author.

Career

Virgo began his professional career in 1976 at the age of 30. In 1977 he made it through two qualifying wins in the round of 16 at the World Snooker Championship , which was held for the first time that year at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield. This was followed by a quarter-finals at the UK Championship in 1978 .

He achieved the best results of his career in the following year: his entry into the semi-finals at the 1979 World Snooker Championship was followed by victory at the 1979 UK Championship against reigning World Champion Terry Griffiths . He won the final 14:13 and thus the biggest tournament victory of his career. In the recently introduced snooker world rankings , he rose to 10th place.

In the eighties he consistently played in the range between 10th and 20th place in the world rankings. At the World Championships, however, he never got beyond the last sixteen. With the beginning of the 1990s and the steadily increasing competition due to structural changes on the Main Tour, he fell back a little in the ranking and ended his professional career in 1995.

other activities

From 1991 to 2002 he was the co-host of the snooker-based game show Big Break on BBC 1. He is also a co-host on the BBC's snooker broadcasts to this day. He gained a certain prominence through his frequently asked question about the whereabouts of individual balls.

Virgo was a popular trick shot player and authored two books on the subject. Another book by him is devoted to the biography of Alex Higgins .
