The Norwich Union Open was a professional snooker tournament that was held twice in the mid-1970s and had the status of an invitation tournament. Both editions of the Norwich Union sponsored tournament took place at the Piccadilly Hotel in London . John Spencer was the winner of both editions ; Ray Reardon played the highest break in tournament history with a 130 break.
history
The first edition of the tournament took place at the end of November 1973 in London's Piccadilly Hotel with 24 participants, including both professional and amateur players, and with Norwich Union as a sponsor. There was a total of £ 3,500 to be won. The tournament was played in the knockout system and began with a round of the last 24, the winners of which met the other participants in the round of 16. With John Spencer and John Pulman two former world champions reached the final ; the young Spencer defeated old master Pulman 8: 7. In the semifinals, the former had played the highest break of the edition with a 74 break.
The second edition took place in November 1974 at the same location and with the same sponsor, but only 16 players took part. However, there were again some amateurs in the field. The tournament was played again in the knockout system , but started directly with the round of 16. John Spencer reached the final again and met world champion Ray Reardon , whom he again narrowly defeated 10: 9. During the final, Reardon played the only century break with a 130 break and thus the highest break in tournament history. There were no further issues afterwards.
