The 1977 Dry Blackthorn Cup was a one-time snooker invitation tournament of the 1977/78 season . It was held on December 21, 1977 at the Wembley Conference Center in London , England . The winner was Irishman Patsy Fagan , who defeated Northern Irishman Alex Higgins 4-2 in the final. Welshman Ray Reardon played the highest break of the tournament with a 77 break.

Prize money

The name-giving sponsor of the tournament was Dry Blackthorn . The total prize money paid out was £ 4,000 , half of which went to the winner.

Tournament course

The tournament, which was invented by boxing promoter Mike Barrett and was the first snooker tournament to be held at Wembley Conference Center , three of the leading players of the time were invited: Alex Higgins , Ray Reardon and John Spencer . The field of participants was completed by Irishman Patsy Fagan , who had previously won the first edition of the UK Championship . All games were played in the best of 7 frames mode, so it happened that all games ended with a 4: 2.

The tournament was played only once and replaced with the Champion of Champions the following year .

In the final, Patsy Fagan and Alex Higgins, an Irishman and a Northern Irishman , met during the conflict in Northern Ireland . Both had won their semi-finals 4-2 and after an initial lead from Higgins, Fagan took a 2-1 lead before Higgins equalized. However, Fagan won the following two frames and thus the game and the tournament with 4: 2.
