The Gibraltar Open is a snooker tournament the professional tour with World Ranking status . They are a Pro-Am tournament, which means that in addition to professional players, amateurs can also take part. In 2015 they were held as a minor ranking tournament as part of the PTC series.

history

In the 2014/15 season , the Players Tour Championship consisted of six tournaments on the European continent. For the 2015/16 PTC season , however, only 5 tournaments were available after the Lisbon Open was canceled in Portugal . As a result, the WPBSA agreed a new tournament with the government of Gibraltar at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula. It was the first professional tournament in the British overseas territory . As part of the PTC series, the 2015 Gibraltar Open were open to amateurs. The main tournament of the last 128 players lasted only three days and was played in best-of-7 mode throughout, including the final . It was a minor ranking tournament, which means that there was less prize money (€ 25,000 for the winner) and thus only had a lower value for the world rankings . In return, the players were able to qualify for a full ranking tournament, the Grand Final , and for the next snooker season via the tour rating . The first winner was the Chinese Marco Fu, who was born in Hong Kong .

The contract for the Gibraltar Open was concluded for three years, but other contracts expired in 2016 and the Players Tour Championship had to be discontinued. The Gibraltar Open was retained and, together with the Paul Hunter Classic, remained the only two tournaments with the special mode and a pre-qualification for amateur players. There was also a rating from both tournaments through which one could qualify for the EBSA Amateur Play Offs and play for two places on the professional tour.
