The Victoria Stadium is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar . The sports facility is located on Winston Churchill Avenue , which crosses the airport runway, and is therefore in the immediate vicinity of Gibraltar Airport .

The main stand of Victoria Stadium

The stadium has a capacity of 5,000. Only a small part of the main stand is covered. The six-lane athletics facility runs around the artificial turf . In addition to the stadium there is a hockey rink , several tennis courts , a swimming center , an archery range , basketball fields , a golf training area and other sports facilities such as B. for table tennis . The individual facilities belong to the Bayside Sports Complex .

The stadium is used by all clubs in Gibraltar as their home ground, as there is no other stadium in Gibraltar.

After the Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) joined UEFA in 2013 after 20 years of efforts , plans were presented the following year for a new stadium with 8,066 seats at Europa Point . There was resistance to this and the project is being delayed. As default venue for the UEFA-funded stadium, the site of the former is barracks Lathbury Barracks favors. The Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society (GONHS) expressed concern about the site plans for the new building. After joining FIFA 2016, the GFA tried unsuccessfully to obtain a special permit for the Victoria Stadium for the qualifying games for the 2018 World Cup , so that they had to move back to the Estádio Algarve in Portugal .

On April 18, 2017, the GFA announced on its website that the Football Association and the city-state of Gibraltar had reached an agreement to take over the Victoria Stadium. For this, GFA is paying the government £ 16.5 million and investing a further £ 15 million in the renovation and expansion of the sports facility and the old sports hall. GFA will pay the £ 16.5m in three installments (twice £ 5m for 2017/18 and £ 6.5m for 2018/19). The money comes exclusively from FIFA and UEFA . GFA pays for the renovation. The football stadium is to be expanded to 8,000 seats and meet the criteria of UEFA stadium category 4 . In 2019 the Island Games will take place in Gibraltar; the Victoria Stadium is planned as a venue for the sporting event.

On September 4, 2018, the building permit for the new national stadium was granted. The Gibraltar Football Association announced this on Twitter . The construction work should start in 2019 and take place during ongoing operations.
