The Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) is the governing body of football in Gibraltar . The GFA was a provisional member of UEFA from December 2006 to January 2007 and held this status again from October 2012 until it was finally accepted on May 24, 2013 as the 54th full member of UEFA. On May 13, 2016, the association became the 211th member of FIFA . The president of the association is Desmond Reoch .

history

The association was founded in 1895 as the Gibraltar Civilian Football Association , making it one of the oldest football associations in the world.

In December 2006, Gibraltar was admitted as a provisional member of UEFA. At the UEFA General Assembly in Düsseldorf the following month, however, the application for full membership did not find a majority, even though the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS) had previously recommended that the Continental Federation accept Gibraltar as a member. In October 2012, Gibraltar was granted temporary member status again. The decision on full membership was made by the UEFA Congress on May 24, 2013 in London . The main problem until then was the resistance of Spain, which lays territorial claims to the possession of Gibraltar . On September 20, 2013, at a special meeting in an executive meeting in Dubrovnik , UEFA decided that GFA club teams would take part in the qualifications for the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League for the first time in the 2014/15 season . The national team will also take part in qualifying for the 2016 European Championship .

On September 26, 2014, the world football association FIFA refused the association membership on the grounds that Gibraltar was not an independent state . This decision was later revised and GFA was finally admitted to FIFA as the 211th member on May 13, 2016.
