The Gibraltar national football team is the national team of the British overseas territory Gibraltar under the direction of the Gibraltar Football Association (GFA). On May 24, 2013, GFA became the 54th full member of UEFA. She took in the qualifying for the European Championship 2016 in France for the first time in qualifying matches for European part. On May 13, 2016, GFA became the 211th member of FIFA .

history

Gibraltar have never been able to qualify for a European or World Cup. Gibraltar's first international appearances mainly took place at the Island Games , which are held every two years. This tournament also resulted in Gibraltar's highest victory against the football selection of the island of Sark with 19: 0. In the early summer of 2006, Gibraltar took part in the FIFI Wild Cup in Hamburg and came third there.

Efforts to become an independent member of UEFA and FIFA have repeatedly failed in the past due to objections from the Spanish Football Association . The possibility of Gibraltar membership in UEFA increased in 2006 when the International Court of Sport (CAS) recommended that the Continental Federation accept Gibraltar as a member. In December 2006, Gibraltar was accepted as a provisional member of UEFA. The UEFA Congress in Düsseldorf at the end of January 2007 decided on full membership , where Gibraltar, the 54th member country, was rejected. On October 1, 2012, Gibraltar was re-admitted as a provisional member of UEFA.

The UEFA Congress on May 24, 2013 in London decided on full membership, with Gibraltar finally being admitted as a full member. Thus, the national team took part in a tournament for the first time in qualifying for the 2016 European Championship in France, where they met Germany , Ireland , Poland , Scotland and Georgia . On November 19, 2013, Gibraltar played the first official international match against Slovakia in the Estádio Algarve in Faro, Portugal . It ended 0-0, which was classified as a respectable success. The second international match on March 1, 2014 at home in Victoria Stadium was clearly lost with 1: 4 against the Faroe Islands ; Roy Chipolina scored the first international goal since joining UEFA with a header. In the fifth official international match on June 4, 2014 against Malta, the first victory was achieved with a goal by Kyle Casciaro .

The football association of Gibraltar made its first coach dismissal as a UEFA member in March 2015. Allen Bula , who had held a responsible position on the bench at all official internationals, had to resign. He was temporarily replaced by his assistant David Wilson . In July 2015, the association presented Jeff Wood, a full-time successor to the head coach position. As part of the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League , Gibraltar achieved their first victory in a competitive game and an away game in October 2018 with a 1-0 away win against Armenia .

Participation in Gibraltar in the European Football Championship

The Gibraltar national team took part in a qualification for the European Football Championship for the first time in 2014 . When the qualifying groups were drawn in Nice on February 23, 2014 , Gibraltar was drawn in Group D with Germany, Ireland, Poland, Scotland and Georgia. After four defeats without a goal of his own, Lee Casciaro scored the first competitive goal for Gibraltar on March 29, 2015 in a 6-1 draw against Scotland with the goal to make it 1-1.
