The Estádio Algarve is the football stadium for the Portuguese cities of Faro and Loulé . The border between the two cities runs right through the playing field. It was built on the occasion of the 2004 European Football Championship as one of ten venues.

history

Estádio Algarve

The Estádio Algarve was the venue for two preliminary round matches and a quarter-final of the 2004 European Football Championship. It was the southernmost venue for the European Championship tournament. The stadium now holds 30,305 spectators and was officially opened on November 23, 2003. For the first football match, the teams from SC Farense and Louletano DC met for a friendly match.

It is jointly owned by the municipalities of Faro and Loulé . The sports facility is located in Parque das Cidades , around eight kilometers north of Faro, halfway between the two cities. The clubs of the sponsoring communities Faro and Loulé only play in the lower football leagues and the staging of their games in the Estádio Algarve would be a losing business because of the low audience response. Due to its various uses, however, it is now a popular stadium in Portugal. In addition to football such as the Algarve Cup, there are other sporting events of all kinds. These included rugby games , mountain bike races, flight model meetings and walking events . The stadium has also been used for the Rally Portugal since 2007 . A race track was also built into the interior for this purpose.

The Portuguese national football team usually plays friendly matches in the stadium. Since 2013 all home games of the club SC Olhanense have taken place in the stadium in the Algarve.

The Gibraltar Football Association has been a member of UEFA since May 2013 . Since the association could not present a suitable stadium in Gibraltar for its national team for international matches and qualification for the 2016 European Championship , the home games were played at the Estádio Algarve from 2013 to 2017. Gibraltar's first official international match ended on November 19, 2013 in Faro with a 0-0 draw against Slovakia . On June 4, 2014, Gibraltar achieved its first victory in the fifth official international match against Malta at the Estádio Algarve .

Furnishing

The most striking feature of the stadium designed by architect Damon Lavelle (HOK Sport) is the roofing of the two-storey main and opposite stands. They are spanned by 73 meters high, arched steel structures covered with membranes , which are enthroned on four concrete columns. The roof has a weight of 1,200 tons . The football arena, which cost 118.7 million euros, offers space for 30,305 visitors in its four individual stands. Most of the facilities at the sports facility are located on the main grandstand in the west. On the third floor there is a panorama restaurant with 250 seats and a view of the stadium interior. The room for press conferences and seminars with 220 seats is on the second floor. The media center with 350 seats is also on the second floor. In addition, the main tier offers eleven VIP boxes, which are equipped with air conditioning , a separate entrance and a private car park. Twenty food and drink stands are spread across the stadium's stands. Around the stadium there are 3,500 parking spaces for cars and 160 for buses in four zones.

Grandstands

The stadium has a total of 30,305 seats, around two thirds of which are covered. This includes a total of 320 VIP seats in the stadium .

  • East stand: Opposite stand , covered, 10,761 seats
