FIFI Wild Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FIFI Wild Cup , also known as the "alternative world championship", was a soccer tournament before the 2006 soccer world championship in Germany. It took place from May 29 to June 3, 2006 in Hamburg .

background

This short tournament started teams that are not recognized by FIFA as members and were therefore not allowed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. Some of these teams are organized in the Nouvelle Fédération Board , and some of these teams are officially striving for admission to FIFA. Gibraltar has now achieved this. However, the NF board organized its own tournament in November 2006 with the Viva World Cup .

The "Wild Cup" has its own mascot (Schäfer & Schmitz). The patron of the event was the German presenter Elton . The Wild Cup opened on May 29, 2006 and ended on June 3, 2006.

The media design of the tournament as a fun and commercial event gave rise to criticism, as it could question the sporting character of the tournament. Linked to this was the assumption that it was actually less about the concerns of the participating teams than about the interests of the sponsors, e.g. B. the television station DSF , today Sport1 , would go. Nevertheless, the event first had to be put on a financially secure foundation so that the teams could even participate. A large part of the teams' expenses were covered by sponsorship.

The response from the participating teams was consistently positive. Isolated teams such as Tibet were able to use the opportunity to present themselves in a tournament for the first time.

Attendees

In 2006 teams from Zanzibar (trained by television comedian Oliver Pocher ), Northern Cyprus, Gibraltar, Greenland and Tibet took part. The host team was the “Republic of St. Pauli”, a team of former professionals. The event took place in the stadium of FC St. Pauli , the stadium at Millerntor . The organizers of the tournament were the Essen agencies Carat Sponsorship GmbH and Western Star GmbH.
