Island Games
The Island Games are a sports competition between autonomous islands or archipelagos held every two years by the International Island Games Association (IIGA) . The participating territories compete in a wide variety of sports . Independent island states have not been permitted for this event since 1999, as that would not correspond to the purpose of the event.
history
The IIGA and thus the Island Games were founded in 1985 on the Isle of Man , Great Britain . As a result of sponsorship from the National Westminster Bank , the full name of the games has been NatWest Island Games since 1999 . The following members have taken part so far (in brackets, year of first or last participation):

Prince Edward Island left the IIGA in 2009 for financial reasons.
Special features of the participants
As a peninsula, Gibraltar is the only participant with a direct connection to the mainland ( Spain ). Anglesey, Hitra and Prince Edward Island are connected to their respective mainland by bridges or tunnels. Greenland is by far the largest of all islands, ahead of Iceland and the Falkland Islands, while Sark is the smallest after Alderney and Gibraltar. Before Iceland, Malta was the participant with the most inhabitants, currently this is the Isle of Wight. After the Falkland Islands and Alderney, Sark also has the fewest inhabitants.
