The National Westminster Bank , also known as NatWest for short , is a British credit institution based in Bishopsgate , London . The bank was created in 1968 through the merger of the National Provincial Bank with Westminster Bank . NatWest has been a subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) since 2000 . Prior to the hostile takeover by RBS for £ 21 billion , Legal & General and the Bank of Scotland also made expressions of will for a merger with NatWest. The bank mainly serves customers in England and Wales and also operates in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland through its subsidiary Ulster Bank . In February 2020, the Royal Bank of Scotland announced that the entire group would be renamed the NatWest Group in the course of the 2020 calendar year. RBS thus takes over the name of the subsidiary NatWest, which was taken over in 2000.

NatWest promoted cricket sponsorship for a long time and held the naming rights to the Natwest Trophy . The Tower 42 was originally built as "NatWest Tower" and served as the company's headquarters. The structure was the tallest building in the UK until 1990.
