Friends Provident Trophy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Friends Provident Trophy is the most important one-day cricket competition of the English first-class county clubs, in which, in addition to the 18 first-class counties, other teams such as Scotland, Ireland, the Netherlands and so-called minor county teams also took part. It was held in the pure cup system, i.e. the knockout system, until 2005. The final takes place regularly in August or September at Lord's Cricket Ground .

history

The competition was formerly called the Gillette Cup (1963-1980), Natwest Trophy (1981-2000) and Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy (2001-2006). The insurer Friends Provident holds the naming rights today . It was the first ever one-day cricket competition for first-class cricket teams. The reason for its introduction was the strong decline in attendance at the County Championship for years . The year before, an experimental competition, the Midlands Cup , was held between four of the first-class counties. In the early years, the idea of a one-day game with a limited number of overs per innings met with great rejection from many traditional cricket fans.

In the first season the innings were limited to 65 overs, from 1964 only to 60 overs. As an adaptation to the international standard, a limit of 50 overs has been in effect since 1999. In 2005, instead of the traditional white, colorful playing clothes were used for the first time, and a white ball was used instead of the red ball. The oldest one-day competition is therefore also the last to follow the standard in one-day cricket that has long been established internationally.

In 2006 the C&G Trophy lost its old format. The 18 first-class teams plus Scotland and Ireland were divided into a north and a south group, the respective winners contested the now traditional final at Lord's. Since the 2007 season, a semi-final round has been pushed in between.

The 20 participating teams will be divided into four regional groups of five teams each in the 2008 season. The first two in each group qualify for the quarter-finals.

From the 2010 season, the Friends Provident Trophy and the National League were replaced by a 40-over competition with preliminary round groups and semifinals, which runs under the name Clydesdale Bank 40 .
